Biela Leads Men's Soccer Past UMass Dartmouth, 5-1

Worcester, MA --- Senior Justin Biela (Bridgewater, MA) had a hand in every goal with a career best seven points to help propel Worcester State to a 5-1 triumph over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Coughlin Field.

With the win the Lancers even out their record to 6-6-2 while the Corsairs fall to 9-5-1.

UMD got on the board early on in the contest when freshman Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA) scored off a pass from sophomore Kyle Duarte (New Bedford, MA), following a corner kick in the eighth minute. Gontijo's marker was his eighth of the season.

That would complete the scoring in the opening frame as the Lancers would put the pressure on, holding an 8-6 edge in shots and a 5-1 lead in corners.

The contest would remain in favor of UMass Dartmouth until sophomore Brian Cormier (Hudson, MA) knotted the game in the 62nd minute with his first goal of the season on a dish by Biela, following a corner.

The Lancers would then seize the momentum and notched the go-ahead and insurance tallies in a span of five minutes.

Cormier returned to favor to Biela on a pass from the midfield on a breakaway, for what proved to be the game-winner in the 65th minute, and then sophomore Edward Brennan (Worcester, MA) flicked a header to Biela in the 70th minute for the 3-1 advantage.

Worcester State put the game away with headers four minutes apart. Biela sent a direct play off of a corner kick to senior Kerlenz Benjamin (Randolph, MA) in the 75th minute before Hinds registered the final marker in the 79th off a free kick from 15 yards away. The goals were both Hinds and Benjamin's second tallies of the year.

Fourth-year keeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) turned aside one shot in the victory for the Lancers while freshman Tim Walsh (Stow, MA) collected four saves in the setback for the Corsairs.

There were two team saves in the contest. UMD sophomore Jonathan DaCosta (New Bedford, MA) kept the game in favor of the visitors in the 34th minute and then senior Brian Gillis (Brockton, MA) added one for the hosts to keep the game right where it was early in the second half.

WSU would enjoy a 20-13 advantage in shots and a 9-2 lead in corners.

The two squads will return to their respective conference schedules on Saturday afternoon for road matches at 1 PM. The Blue and Gold travel to Salem State while the Corsairs head to Keene State.
