Lancers Conclude Fall Season with Ninth Place Finish at NEIGA’s

BREWSTER, Mass – The Worcester State University men's golf team concluded their fall 2016 campaign with a ninth place finish at the 82nd Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship hosted at The Captains Course Sunday and Monday, Oct. 23-24.


159 golfers from Divisions II, III and Club teams competed from 32 colleges and universities across New England and New York.


Babson College's Chris Bornhorst defeated Castleton University's Zachary Temple in a one-hole playoff to win the NEIGA Championship.  Both players shot a two-day total of 148. 


Worcester State's Mike Jezierski (Thompson, Conn.) wasn't far off from a 148, scoring 153 (+9) for an eighth place finish among the Division III golfers. Jezierski carded a 79 in the first round of play, and then refined his play on day two, carding a 74 on the par-72 course.


Worcester State's Patrick Sharron (Boylston, Mass.) followed Jezierski as he tied for 27th place with seven other individuals, scoring a 161 (82-79) on both rounds.


Steven Ferraro (Leicester, Mass.) came in tied at 46th place with an 87 on the first round, and a 77 on the second for a total of 164. Eddie Peladeau (Douglas, Mass.) tied at 69th place with a 169 (83-86), while Kyle Puzzo (Ludlow, Mass.) rounded up the scoring for the Lancers with an 84th place finish totaling a 173 (85-88).


Southern New Hampshire University won the Division II and Overall Team Championship with a total score of 616, one shot better than Division III medalist Babson College. Providence College won the Club Division with a total score of 626.


"It was a pretty tough weekend all the way around," commented head coach Mark Gurski. "They did a good job sticking with the game plan and didn't give up."


In the long drive and closest to the pin contests, sponsored by Cleveland Golf/Srixon during Round 1, Peladeau (Worcester State College) and Brett Chatfield (Bentley University) won the long drive contests. The closest to the pins were won by Chad Alibozek (Salem State University) and Austin McCreary (Assumption College).


"Overall, it was a nice way to end the fall season," concluded Gurski. "It was also a nice bonus with Eddie winning the long drive contest on Saturday."
